How can you tell a 1995 BMW M3 from a regular 3 series?

I am stationed in Baumholder germany and am about to purchase a 1995 3 series BMW. He said it was a 316i, but the title book is in german, and there are no badges noting the model. It has M series aluminum rims, spoiler, and other tell-tell signs it might

Sounds like the car was optioned with model-designation delete and the M-package, though these could be after-market changes. Either way, this setup will look great and deliver high MPG's, but isn't going to be nearly as fast as it looks.

Wider, Wedgier BMW 3 Series Gets a 4-Cylinder Engine for 2012

The sixth iteration of the BMW 3 Series sedan, arriving at United States dealers in February, has grown bigger in terms of wheelbase and overall length, smaller in terms of the engine bay and more efficient all around. It remains, however, thoroughly recognizable as the brand’s volume-leading saloon.

Wedgier and wider, with a squat new kidney grille, the refreshed 3 looks more muscled in profile than its predecessor, although traditional design elements — angel-eye halos around the headlights, circular dials on the driver-oriented dash — appear only slightly tweaked, if at all.

The more notable changes are to be found under the hood. The 328i sheds a pair of pistons and some in-line 6-cylinder sweetness for a twin-scroll turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the same unit that appears in the 2012 BWM Z4 sDrive28i, recently reviewed in the Automobiles section. The 328i matches the output figures for the Z4, at 240 horsepower and a diesel-like 260 pound-feet of torque from 1,250 r.p.m. BMW claims that the 328i reaches 62 miles per hour in 5.9 seconds.
