Those are but a few of the words that jump to mind when the ordinary person hears the term or thinks of the image of a “cowboy.” It is said that one can’t go anywhere in the world — any continent, any country, any culture — where cowboy hats and boots aren’t instantly recognized as American.
How did that happen? Of course everyone is aware of western movies, TV programs and paperback books that painted the vivid picture of the nineteenth century American west and romanticized the American cowboy. But what is all that based on? What really made it all happen?
Once the bison were gone and the conflicts with the Native Americans were past, railroads punched west across the vast prairie wilderness of the Plains. About the same time, those returning to Texas following the Civil War found their prairie thickly populated with millions of Longhorn cattle left to run wild and unclaimed during the war.
