Subaru Legacy wagon Front axle booth is torn?

Subaru front axle booth is torn and cost >$300 to replace
because they will also replace the axle.
What will happen if I don't replace the rubber booth?
Are special tools required to replace the booth. Could I sew/stitch the cut

If there is a rip in the rubber "boot", all the grease will get slung out of the CV joint and eventually it will fail. It may take a short time, or it may take a long time. Really no telling. I would try and find a cheaper estimate though. In
