In the Carnegie Technical Schools and between 1905 and 1915 a number of major buildings, most still standing, had been erected. In addition, in 1917 Carnegie Tech became a center for wartime training, resulting in construction of temporary structures such as barracks, classroom buildings and labs.Both permanent and temporary buildings had to be provided with light and heat, as well as with power to operate machinery. Several of the major buildings were connected to the coal-using boilers in the power house in the basement of Machinery Hall (erected 1914, now Hamerschlag Hall), but many burned gas supplied by Peoples Natural Gas Co. to heat boilers and stoves. A Westinghouse Gas Engine that used producer gas to drive electric generators also operated in Machinery Hall.
In 1917 Peoples Gas caused a crisis when it notified the school of a rate increase and warned that there might be a shortage of gas during the winter that would force the school to close down for several winter months. Arthur A. Hamerschlag, the school's director and later president, warned in his 1917 Annual Report that the school was "wholly dependent on natural gas."
