How does a recoil starter work on a small diesel?

Yanmar makes single cylinder 4 1/2 horsepower diesel engines that can supposedly be started with a recoil starter. How does that overcome the compression as diesels have 15:1 to 25:1 compression ratios? Typical is around 500 lbs. To overcome this, it
